Description

Metoclopramide syrup is primarily used to treat nausea, vomiting, and symptoms of slow stomach emptying (gastroparesis), particularly in people with diabetes or those undergoing chemotherapy. It works by enhancing the motility of the upper gastrointestinal tract, making it effective for conditions like delayed gastric emptying.

For adults, the usual oral dose for gastroparesis is 10 mg, taken four times a day before meals and at bedtime for 2 to 8 weeks, depending on the patient’s response. For nausea and vomiting due to chemotherapy, doses can range from 1-2 mg/kg, depending on the emetogenic potential of the chemotherapy.

Common side effects include drowsiness, fatigue, headache, dizziness, diarrhea, and gastrointestinal issues. Serious side effects can include movement disorders (like tremors or rigidity), depression, or rare but severe allergic reactions. Long-term use of metoclopramide, especially at high doses, may also lead to side effects like tardive dyskinesia, which causes irreversible involuntary movements

As with any medication, it’s important to follow the prescribed dosage and consult a healthcare provider for appropriate usage and to manage any side effects.
